Buying my 3rd one, grrrrrrr....
Date: 2009-03-11 | Rating: 1
These plastic jars just don't last. I don't know how this even qualifies as a viable product. We have to replace ours every several months. We don't do anything abnormal with it. Smoothies mainly, and we use our icemaker to pre-crush the ice for it (since we know it's so sensitive). It doesn't take long for cracks to appear, and then come the sticky leaks that get all over the blender and the counter. And, it's so expensive. Unfortunately, our blender (the KSB-580, which is similar to the 560, I think) doesn't take the standard glass jar. Big mistake on our part. At some point, I guess, we'll need to buy a new blender so we don't have to keep replacing the jar. Argh.

Simplicity itself!
Date: 2006-11-23 | Rating: 5
I considered this an optional kitchen item, but I hate having to make sauce or soup by dipping it out of the pot a little at a time into the blender, then pouring it into another bowl--tedious and time-consuming. I was doubtful that something like this would do the job, but decided to give it a try. What fun! A simple on and off switch, an easily detachable and washable blade housing, and unlike most appliances these days, it comes with a long cord. And it's plenty powerful for my purposes. Besides the fact that it blends leek and potato soup into a beautiful cream quickly, it also makes homemade mayonnaise in less than a minute, including the time it takes to gather the ingredients. That was my first attempt ever at mayonnaise, and it was easy, which was amazing. (Recipe using Egg Beaters, lemon juice and oil comes with it--just dump in all together and blend). I think it would be a little easier in another small bowl, rather than the one that came with the blender, however, as I ended up overblending it in that one. The one caveat I have is that, if one attempts to make bean soup, one should make sure all the big chunks of ham are taken out of the pot beforehand. There was this big THUNK, you see, and after cleaning bean juice off my stove, walls, floor, refrigerator, clothes, face and hair, I learned my lesson.

KitchenAid versus Cuisinart...
Date: 2005-04-27 | Rating: 5
Amazon sells the two best (I know that is gramatically incorrect since there can be only 1 'best'). Cuisinart: 1) $15 less, even taking into account the $5 KitchenAid rebate. 2) Nylon guard which means the preparer may use right in the cooking vessel. 3) Longer warranty (18 mos. versus 12 mos. KitchenAid). KitchenAid: 1) Multi-speed (versus 2-speed for the Cuisinart). 2) Mixing attachment is removable which means easier storage. 3) Choice of colors (for those who care).

Blenderizing is a breeze
Date: 2007-06-13 | Rating: 5
I became my wife's student after my retirement last year. I scored consistently a low C until I bought this immersion blender based on an LA Times article. Now I whip up hummus, chutney and smoothies that even she acknowledges reluctantly, are worth a second notice. It is easy to assemble -just insert the blade wand handle, easier to clean -just rinse and dry before storing, and compact sized. Variable speeds are available and the blades blend fruits, nuts and vegetables effortlessly. The default lid does not close the base-beaker while you are blending. Without a cover the blending contents may spray if you are not wary. What I did was cut a slit with a central hole out of a plastic lid from a 32 oz Dannon yogurt carton. I use that to cover the beaker while blending. Works well for me. Enjoy.

If you are indeed a Chef, this is the tool for you

I am not saying that there are not better immersion blenders available, because I don't honestly know, but for the price, this is a very good one. It has satisified all requirements, and has been used frequently for a wide variety of purposes for about a month now. If you are a chef, and know exactly what you will use this for, then you can buy this brand with confidence. As to the brand, Kitchen-Aid, a number of their products are in my kitchen right now, and I have to say, it is in general a brand of quality and distinction, at least for middle-class families, and especially compared among the brands you will find in your average department store. The price/performance ratio is Good.

Amazingly well designed and easy to keep clean
Date: 2006-10-28 | Rating: 5
Have to say "ditto" to all the reviewers below--I owned another brand before but it wasn't nearly as powerful. At least one reviewer expresses concern about keeping the blades clean, so I must note that the instructions indicate everything but the motor housing--which detaches from the blade element--can go in the dishwasher!!

We like to buy things that last
Date: 2009-04-24 | Rating: 5
So, after 30 years, we needed a new blender. Hmmm. My wife and I hadn't a clue where to start nor what was out there. On my first two internet searches all I found were the two extremes: small fractional Hp motors or the ridiculously priced $400 to $500 unit. And yes, of course we want to crush ice - who doesn't? I have enough engineering background to know that a 0.2 to 0.5 Hp motor is NOT going to crush ice. Finally, we found the KitchenAid models! Some were 0.9 Hp, which is more like it. The pitcher (I call it) was a larger diameter and a little squat - perfect design for better blending, not to mention storage. We decided that two speeds just wasn't enough, 3 speeds would be borderline and we certainly didn't want anything ridiculous like 10 or 15 speeds. (That's what they do when the motor is underpowered to do the job.) We settled on the KitchenAid KSB465Wh 4-speed with 48 ounce jar and 0.9 Hp motor. The weight wasn't given but the appearance gave you the idea that the base was good and heavy - a prerequisite. We've used it several times starting about a month ago - it's perfect. It's even better than the one that lasted 30 yrs. The pitcher is dishwasher safe, it has something they call "intelli-speed" which adjusts the horsepower as needed to deliver constant speed. This is something where most blenders fall short, you put something heavy in it and the motors just slows down. The base is good and heavy - hurray, no more tipping over. The ad doesn't mention this but you do NOT dissasemble the pitcher for cleaning! Another big plus. By the way those $40 to $60 blenders don't work and don't last. This one is priced around $72 and you get what you pay for. A very solid unit with a decent motor and good features. And yes, it does a marvelous job grinding ice - a whole tray at a time. And, if you let it go for about 10 seconds you have ice "powder" - it's better than our ice shaver for snow cones. Blending is far superior to our old blender. It digests even the tough stuff easily. We haven't yet really needed to use it but it has pulsed speeds for those really tough materials. I'd recommend THIS blender to anyone who doesn't need to grind nails.

A clear winner!
Date: 2009-05-26 | Rating: 5
After doing more blender research than I care to admit to myself, I narrowed my search to three blenders. I selected this model after speaking to a most informed and helpful Kitchenaid customer service rep who answered my remainding questions one Saturday afternoon. Since, they staffed their customer serviced department on the weekends, I was already impressed. This blender replaced a just out-of-warranty Cuisinart blender which I loved, until it died a premature death, I can say without hestiattion this model is far better. Since I use our blender daily to make breakfast smoothies, some with ice, I thought my blender needs were simple. Quite to the contrary, I discovered. There is no middle ground when it comes to chopping ice and this blender does a superb and lighin' quick job. I add very frozen berries to the morning mix and this blender handles them beautifully. The performance, design, ease of operation and cleaning each have exceeded my expectations.

Best blender ever.
Date: 2009-09-26 | Rating: 5
I have only used about four blenders in my life but this is by far the best I have come across. I picked it up by chance on the clearance end cap at Target but if I knew how well it worked I would have gladly paid full price. I have never seen a blender crush ice so well, in fact my fiancee and myself are eating snow cones we just made with it as I type. It makes the smoothest smoothies ever, I can't wait to find more uses for it!

VERY HAPPY
Date: 2009-12-01 | Rating: 5
I LOVE THIS BLENDER. I MAKE A SMOOTHIE EVERY MORNING, AND THIS HANDLES THE BIG FROZEN STRAWBERRIES LICKITY SPLIT. I HAD BEEN USING A OLD, HALF-BROKEN BLENDER THAT SMELLED FUNNY AND LEFT LUMPS. THE CHANGE IS WONDERFUL. THIS ONE IS VERY WELL DESIGNED, EASY TO CLEAN, THE TOP COMES OFF WITHOUT A STRUGGLE, AND IT'S GOOD LOOKING. VERY VERY HAPPY.

Buy this blender!
Date: 2009-09-22 | Rating: 5
I did my research and this blender was rated the highest in several reviews - it has lived up to its reputation. In addition, the size of the jar makes it very easy to clean, easy to store in refrigerator, and easy to place in my half-drawer dishwasher. I love it.

The Blender with Intelligence
Date: 2007-07-21 | Rating: 5
I have owned a lot of blenders and this one is very impressive. I was tempted to give it 4 stars as it is not the best blender I have ever owned. That distinction goes to the Vita-Mix which has a nuclear reactor for a base, sounds like a Harley and cost as much as a microwave but if you need a blender that can crush anything and make flour and HOT soup....well....but back to the KitchenAid. First it looks great. As a home chef, having a sleek modern looking kitchen is important. Second it is easy to clean... I will never own a push button (i.e. old Oster-type) blender again. Nor one with a multi piece jar. One leak can and has ruined an evening or party, as you run to grab paper towel and dish clothes to control the margarita or soup that is running across your counter and down your cabinets. Then the fun of cleaning your blender nooks begin....grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Now the really impressive part. I have owned a Waring for years. Everyone always raves about it and if you have a thin liquid, it works great. But for crushing ice and making smoothies, it just flat out sucks. So I sought out an ice crushing (margaritas), sealed jar (gravies/soups), lightweight, large capacity (parties), easy touch (easy to clean), piece of art. The KitchenAid is all those things and has a logic built in that controls the blade speed. It knows how well it is crushing the ice and modulates the motor to ensure an even snow like texture that is incredible. The same system is also built into the other modes, measuring resistance to step the motor up, then back it down to ensure smooth results. This is my first KitchenAid product, but it will not be my last. BRAVO

Top-Notch Blender
Date: 2008-03-11 | Rating: 5
This is an excellent, high-quality blender. We replaced an inexpensive Oster with it and like this KitchenAid much, much more. Things I really like: 1) Power - this blender whips through hard-frozen fruit like nothing is there for wonderful smoothies. 2) Smooth, one piece control panel - makes for super-easy clean-up as there are no cracks or crevices to trap spills. Yet, the buttons behind the panel still have a nice tactile click response so you know you pressed one. 3) Brushed nickel finish - very attractive on your counter. 4) Polycarbonate jar - this worried me when considering this purchase as our old blender had a nice, thick glass jar. But, after using this blender for 3 months, I like this jar better. It is thick, yet lightweight, and hasn't scratched (although I only use rubber or silicone spatulas inside any way). 5) One piece blades & jar - our old blender had a screw-off base, resulting in 4 parts for clean-up - the base, the blade assembly, the jar itself & a rubber gasket. This blender's blades are permanently mounted in the bottom of the jar making for easy clean-up. I either just put it in the dishwasher on the bottom shelf, or I rinse it out, fill it up halfway with warm water & a small squirt of dishwasher detergent and run it on medium for 10 seconds or so. Unlike another reviewer, I have experienced no leaks. There is a hex hut on the bottom of the jar that holds in the blade assembly & I am sure there is a rubber gasket underneath the nut. If I ever do get a leak, I plan trying to slightly tighten this nut with an adjustable wrench - I imagine it could possibly loosen over time due to vibration. The bottom line is that while there are certainly many less expensive blenders on the market, this is an extremely powerful, well-built & attractive option. I think it is worth the price (I had a $20 rebate to lessen the sting), but others may not depending on their budget. UPDATE after a summer of making daiquiris & margaritas - This blender makes FANTASTIC frozen drinks. It really pulverizes the ice & frozen fruit to make a killer frozen cocktail!

Monster ice crusher
Date: 2007-07-02 | Rating: 5
If you're into crushed ice and smoothie type drinks, this is easily the best one I've found. It reduces ice cubes to a smooth slush in just seconds. The "crush ice" mode pulses on and off to crush the ice quickly and few more seconds at a higher speed smooths it out and adds some air volume. It also looks very sleek, so won't mind leaving it out on your bar or in the kitchen.

Fantastic blender design (and execution)
Date: 2008-07-22 | Rating: 5
This blender replaces a 20 year old Hamilton Beach that finally gave up the ghost (after being abused by my lovely spouse one too many times ;-) ). I actually purchased the refurbished one direct from KitchenAid for $100. Out of the box, the pitcher had a small leak, so a thin line of blended goodness and maybe a touch of oil were getting slung around the inside of the base of the pitcher (where the pitcher fits over the base). SOLUTION: Call KitchenAid Customer Service and voila, they are shipping me a new one (they said keep the old, leaky one--I may try to fix it). Now THAT is what I call great customer service. There is some confusion as to the Watts (power) that this thing has: 120V x 6A = 720 Watts (the base simply says 120V, 6A motor) but 0.9hp * 746W/hp = 671 Watts (the advertised spec on the KitchenAid site has 0.9hp) or 650 Watts (according to JC Penny) Let's call it 700 Watts and move on.... Regardless, this blender has plenty of power to crush ice (made smoothies for the kids) and make chocolate malts/shakes. PROS: 1. The pitcher/base interface between the motor and the pitcher itself is intelligently designed (spouse proof?)--no more rubber gears that get ground down to tiny nubs. 2. The pitcher/base interface mechanically makes it essentially tip-proof--it's not coming off the base unless you lift it all the way off). 3. The pitcher is one piece, large (56 oz is nice), and shatter proof (I think glass is a bad idea--think breaking it in the sink while cleaning as it slips out of your hand) 4. The button interface is smooth--no cleaning between mechanical buttons 5. It looks good 6. KitchenAid has top-notch customer service (we own a stand mixer and a refrigerator as well of the same brand). They also sent me a new pitcher when I told them the original was leaking (at their expense). 7. At $100 for refurb (or $129 at JC Penny new), the price 8. A built in cord storage on the bottom 9. 5 year warranty=new), 6 month warranty=refurbished CONS: 1. It is kinda loud...not as loud as my old Hamilton Beach, but you aren't going to have an intimate conversation with someone while it's going. This is not a big deal to me, though, because it blends quickly. 2. The jar base leaks a teeny tiny bit. Even the replacement they sent suffers from this. Great machine for home use. UPDATE a year later--added the two cons. It's ridiculously powerful and I still enjoy using it. To the person who has broken 3 jars, I hafta say--don't put it in the dishwasher, handwash it instead.

I LOVE this blender!
Date: 2008-04-30 | Rating: 5
I received this as a Christmas gift in 2007. So I have had it for four full months and I have not had a single complaint. I read all the reviews about the sound of the motor but decided it was the best for the price anyway. I'm glad the reviews didn't deter me; I expected it to sound like a jet engine from all the reviews, so I was pleasantly surprised to find out it sounds like, you guessed it, a blender! The "Liquify" mode is the only one that is really loud, but you only need run it for a few seconds and Voila! I love the "Crush Ice" mode. It's perfect for margaritas and smoothies with lots of frozen fruit. I use this blender just about everyday. No leaks, no motor problems. That's right...it's a Kitchen-Aid! I hand-wash mine after every use. It's never seen the inside of the dishwasher. I'd be interested in hearing from someone who is brave enough. I don't want to ruin a good thing! Buy this blender! You won't regret it! It's the same price just about everywhere, so no need to comparison shop.

Amazon.com Review
A great gift for those with small kitchens, this hand-held blender and its accessories take the place of several larger appliances. Included are a regular blending blade (which can be immersed 8 inches into soup pots or deep bowls), a wire whisk for beating eggs and batters, and an enclosed chopper for nuts, cheese, and fresh herbs. Also included are a four-cup mixing beaker with a snap-lock lid, useful for storing blended ingredients, as well as a drawstring bag to keep all the components together. KitchenAid covers the blender with a one-year, hassle-free replacement warranty. --Ann Bieri

Whips like a pro!!!
Date: 2005-07-25 | Rating: 5
I learned a long time ago, if you go KitchenAid, you go for life. They make the highest quality, longest life products I have ever seen. This hand mixer is the third of its kind I've owned. I've had two of the Braun models and they died out after about a year of average use. I finally got the KitchenAid and it has been going strong for a few years now. I really like having the ability to go down to the bottom of a large pot, a full 8". Even though it is of substantial weight, it fits your hand like a glove. I found it far superior to the Braun, as a matter of fact, it doesn't even compare. The plastic cup with lid makes an excellent accessory since you can mix and store without wasting time. The chopper is the most efficient I have seen, does a better job that a food processor. I especially like the multi-speed dial. It goes from 1 to 9 so it has the power you need, when you need it. Egg white or whip cream doesn't even challenge it, the whipping attachment makes sure of that. This baby handles like a pro. There are times when you don't need the big mixer and the immersion blender really fills in nicely. You won't be disappointed with the quality, power or its sleek look.

The right tool for the job
Date: 2007-02-16 | Rating: 5
I'm at a point in my life where I am developing a taste for quality, and can finally afford the kind of quality I desire. I like to dabble in the kitchen, so I've been building my arsenal of kitchenware recently. I've invested in some high-quality cookware and utensils, and started working on some appliances. I've got an 11-cup Cuisinart food processor, but that tends to be overkill for a lot of smaller jobs - I hate all the cleanup involved with making a cup of guacamole dip, for instance. I like to use peeled whole tomatoes to make tomato sauce for pasta dishes, but my wife doesn't care for chunks of tomato in the finished sauce. No problem... I just dunk the stick blender right into the can of tomatoes and out comes a nice thick puree with all the rich flavor that pre-made sauces seem to lack. This stick blender came highly recommended by an acquaintance, and it doesn't disappoint. With its high-power motor, variable speed settings and versatile accessories, this is a compact and high-impact kitchen tool. Easy to clean, too. I would urge caution if you've never used one of these before, especially when working with very watery liquids as they can end up getting blown right out of your container if you're not careful.

clean off the counter!
Date: 2007-07-16 | Rating: 5
This exceeded my expectations - I have now put the food processor and blender into the cupboard. I am glad that I got the attachments - do use the chopper a lot and the bowls are quite heavy and stable and very easy cleanup. I am trying to limit "kitchen stuff" to only the truly multipurpose tools and this really fits the bill.

My favorite appliance!
Date: 2005-11-05 | Rating: 5
If you want to make smoothies, stick with your old fashioned standing bar blender; this blender is designed for people who cook. I use my hand blender every day, usually the little food processor attachment to chop steak for our baby or chop herbs from my garden. I also like to use that attachment to puree vegetables like broccoli so I can sneak them into food I know the baby will eat. The whisk attachment makes making waffles in the morning effortless; I just whip the egg whites in the included mixing container without even really being awake. The actual blender attachment is great for making sauces out of pan drippings and aromatic veggies, mashed potatoes, and fruit purees. My favorite appliance!

Something for Everyone

There are many rave reviews here, so I won't bore you more than necesssary. They're all true. I use the chopper all the time. We never ate so much guacamole. That's my favorite part. My husband uses the blender daily for his protein shakes. My sister the chef, and my dear friend, use the whisk attachment all the time. Omelets, cream, etc. You can't lose with this set.

They Redesigned The Container (carafe)!!!

We bought this Kitchenaid blender over a year ago, and after several months the container started to leak. The leak was small, and we put up with it for awhile. We finally got tired of the mess, however, and called the factory. We were told that the container had been redesigned, and they would send us a new one immediately even though our warranty had expired. When we got the new one we could see that it had indeed been redesigned, and have used it for some time now, and NO LEAKS. A leak proof container plus the other great features of this blender now warrant a definite five stars.

Love it - Love it - Love it

After going through 2 Waring PBB blenders - one motor died and blades on both pitchers broke soone after purchase - and many hours of research both online and in store I went out and bought the ksb560 today (would have bought it here but I had a 20% off coupon for store). I was reluctant to buy a "plastic" pitcher but this one is light but sturdy and dishwasher safe, although I would not put in dishwasher but just rinse out after each use. The pitcher has small pinholes on the bottom so when it is turned upside down it drains any excess water left over from washing and does not effect the pitcher otherwise i.e. does not leak contents when upright. On top of that it has a soft grip handle to make holding it easier and is easy to place on and remove from base. A glass or stainless pitcher is also available. The blender base is made of durable metal and not cheap plastic like other models. The clutch on this particular model has been redesigned and better than the other similar KitchenAid 5 speed. I visited KitchenAid's online forum and learned the company actually listens to its customer's complaints about the clutch breaking off so easily. Now for the best part, its quiet!! It blends perfectly and in spite of what others have said about the slight hesitation or what KA calls "soft start" when you first turn it on I really did not notice. The ice crush feature works great, I used it this morning on my frozen strawberries and everything was crushed, no small lingering lumps. I have not used it on ice yet but the manual says you can crush ice without the use of water or liquid which may be a plus for some but ice crushing is not my main use. I use this 2x/day for protein shakes one for me and one for spouse. One more BIG plus and kudos to KitchenAid is that they will replace it if the blender fails within the 1st year and they will arrange for replacement sent to you free of charge.

Awesome blender!

Love the design of this blender! Because the container is ONE molded piece with the blade inside, there is NO leaking or messing with rubber gaskets or taking it apart to clean. I can even blend and store any extra smoothie in the fridge! Draining holes are a smart idea, too--you don't end up with a puddle of water when you wash it and put it upside down to drain, the water drains out! Would definitely recommend this blender!!

A Sweet blender!

This is a great blender for all your blending needs. Its Kitchen-Aid, so you know it's well made. It has great styling and multitudes of colors to fit every decor. The electronic push buttons are a great improvement over the old clunky mechanical buttons. They are easier to clean and operate. Since they are flush with the housing cleanups of spilled items are easy. This is a powerful blender, easily crushing ice, chopping veggies, or mixing that smoothie or pina colada. It works so quickly, yet is relatively quiet. The different settings are useful for different tasks and work automatically. For instance on the ice crush setting it automatically pulses for even ice crushing. Settings such as puree start slow to pull ingredients down into the blades and then it moves up to full speed. Clean up is easy. Simply fill half way with warm soapy water, blend on puree for 20 seconds, and rinse out. For heavier cleaning the pitcher and top is dishwasher safe. If you are thinking of getting a blender, this is the one to get. It may seem pricely spending $100 on a blender, but once you use it you'll wonder why you ever bought one of those $30 cheapos.

KitchenAid 5 Speed Blender (Model KTA-KSB560XX)
Date: 2007-01-29 | Rating: 5
The new KitchenAid 5 Speed Blender (Model KTA-KSB560XX) is impressive. The construction quality is a VAST improvement over the older KSB5 (40 oz. pitcher) models. The base is solid and well-built. The motor is quiet, yet powerful enough to handle my most demanding smoothie tasks. It does a great job of evenly mixing and the Intelli-Speed(tm) (controls and adjusts power to compensate for thicker mixtures) is GREAT. In the past I've always had trouble with blender cups trapping food between the seal and the blade, but the design of this cup eliminates that problem! Overall, the blender resembles that of a high-end commercial unit. The build quality is excellent and delivers high performance at a reasonable price.

The GrandDaddy of Hand Blenders!
Date: 2004-06-25 | Rating: 5
June 25, 2004: I have had a Braun handblender for many years (10 years?), and was pleased with its performance, until it finally lost its spunk last week. I bought this product yesterday as a replacement, and I must say I am very pleasantly surprised! This was a HUGE step up! I would even say that this is a professional quality gadget! (It is certainly styled to look the part!) My favorite thing to make with my handblender is hummus - a mediterranean chick pea dip - and last night I made some the smooooothest hummus I ever made! This is in part because of the 9 speeds available on this model. I started out with lower speeds and then worked my way up to the top one. This is a large handblender, but it was comfortable and easy to use - lightweight even, and sure has a LOT of power. As with most of these products, it was a little difficult to clean the blades, but not a problem. (Really, the best way to clean it is to "blend" a cup of soapy water!) There other models of this that come with attachments - that might be nice in the future, if I want to whip or chop using the attachments - but this basic model with the blender and the cup are all I need for most anything, and worth the price tag for the POWER you get from this brand! It's true what they say - KitchenAid ROCKS! UPDATE: yikes! I was blending bread into breadcrumbs (not toasted, silly me) and it got doughy and really thick and blew the fuse. If anyone knows how to fix that, please comment. I stand by my earlier glowing review - this incident was my fault!

Quite useful, seems well made

For those of you have have never had one, these immersion blenders are quite handy. They are easy to clean, and convenient to use. They also don't take up much space; I keep my KitchenAid unit on the counter, and store the beaker in the cupboard where I keep glasses, with the blender attachment inside. It's no fuss at all if you want to mix just a single drink. While a traditional blender is more versatile, if I had a choice of only one I'd go with the hand blender as being the most useful on a day to day basis. This is the second immersion blender I have owned. I like this one quite a bit; it is powerful, but quiet. I'm not sure whether having 9 speeds is so important, I find I either use speed setting 1 or 9. Maybe they should make custom units that go all the way to 11. ;-) One concern with a device like this is marrying a powerful motor to a removeable attachment. My first device (an Oster) chewed itself to bits, leaving metal shavings in my food (good thing I checked). The KitchenAid unit's attachment has a good positive lock design which makes this improbable. A safety interock would have been better. The metal shaft of the blending attachment is driven by a hard plastic socket with slim splines. This means in the unlikely event of anything ending up in your food, you'll have tiny bits of fractured plastic, not desirable of course, but preferable to long, razor sharp metal shavings. The socket looks like it could be replaced if necessary, but given the price most people would opt for replacing the entire unit over having it serviced. One thing would be nice is if the guard around the actual blades was plastic instead of metal. Then it could be used directly inside nonstick saucepans for pureeing soup. Conclusion: a safety interlock and plastic blender shield would improve this product, but overall it is well made, quiet and safe. Few things are made to last these days, but given how useful this device is, its a safe bet you will get your money's worth.

The Handblender to End all Handblenders

You really can't go wrong with KitchenAid. Form and Function must be their mantra. I use this for sorbet, soups and other instances where a food processor is inconvenient. In fact, I've put my black and decker blender into storage - with the handblender who needs it. You have the very convenient control of the angle. Gone are the days of stick a knife in the blender to get everything blended. The speed control is perfect and the blender is precise enough that you can partially blend items easily. Clean up is a snap and the lower half separates from the motor half. Like my KitchenAid mixer, I get the feeling that I'm going to have this tool for life.

POWERFUL !!!

Like the previous reviewer, I owned a Braun for over 20 yrs. The Braun still works beautifully but I thought I'd like one stronger. I love the KitchenAid quality so I picked KitchenAid. I bought the cobalt blue for $20 including the rebate, so it's a steal. When it arrived, I made some salsa. Thinking it would chop like my Braun, I turned it to speed 9. 5 seconds later, everything was liquidfied. Including the onions! Learned my lesson. Don't make salsa on speed 9. Other than my own fault for underestimating this tool, it's GREAT!! Especially for making smoothie and whipping cream. (I bought the whisk attachement) A definite must tool in the kitchen. I just wish Amazon had the black one on sale when I purchased the blue. One thing I'd like to add is, KitchenAid customer service is excellent. They didn't make me pay for shipping a defective stand mixer back to them. In addition, since they were out of the model I had, they upgraded my 5 qt mixer to a 6 qt professional. That was a 150$ upgrade. I just called them on a stand blender I bought, and they were willing to send out a replacing immediately before retreiving the other one, once again, shipping label would be included. However, after toying with the blender, turned out it was my fault. The stand blender was perfectly fine.

Well worth the price

Like some other reviewers have mentioned, this is a huge step up from the old one-speed stick mixer I'd previously used. Let me count the ways. First, it offers way more speeds than I've seen on any other kitchen appliance (9!?). Second, the detachable element is a big bonus for cleaning. Third, it feels much sturdier and stronger than my old plastic model, and fourth, the price was unbeatable.

WONDERFUL hand-blender
Date: 2004-11-28 | Rating: 5
This among other KitchenAid products were a wedding gift. I absolutely LOVE this blender. It's been great for making smoothies in the morning for breakfast and also as an ice grinder. It has 9 speeds which allow for any consistancy. I highly recommend this product.

Like It Better Every Day

Have stuck my old blender in the cupboard. This is so convenient with the detachable motor - lays flat in a drawer. Clean up is fast. What SOLD me, was the stainless steel blade. I keep finding new uses for it, from bread crumbs to cream soups!

Easy to use and clean
Date: 2006-08-28 | Rating: 5
This hand blender is GREAT because I make fresh salsa often and it's a lot easier to use and clean this hand blender than to use my food processor. The attachments are easy to remove and store. I've looked at a few different hand blenders and I think that quality will always be worth the extra money you put into the product. It's been worth it.

Great Machine
Date: 2007-11-22 | Rating: 5
This is a great machine... Although it is somewhat larger than our old stick blender, there is something to be said for size, it does matter. With 9 speeds you can do almost anything. Frozen drinks are a snap. It crushes ice better than a hammer. Clean-up is easy and quick. This is a heavy duty machine that will be used often.
